Islam And Our Identity In The West Specialist Workshop

Who are we? Muslims living in the West, Western Muslims, Muslim Westerners? Do we belong here and are we a new phenomenon in this part of the world? Can we be Muslim and American/Canadian/Australian/British/European? Are these contradictions? How do we raise our children? Do we have any history in this part of the world?

Let us find our identity in the West and discover our Muslim roots in the Western world, our Islamic heritage in Europe, America and Oceania. As we discover how Islam has entered Europe and has become part of European culture and civilisation, we will find out how it also spread to the Americas and to Australia; how there were Muslims living in the Americas and in Australia long before the arrival of the Europeans!

How do we deal with this information nowadays and how do we find our identity?

Knowledge is power and the more we find out about the spread of Islam in the West the more we raise our confidence level! Let's teach our children these undiscovered and hidden facts of history and make them more self-aware, self-assured and confident! So that they are not ashamed of being Muslims but rather proud Muslim Westerners with an own identity as part of the vast Muslim Ummah!
